Visions of a Park

The visions for a park in North Codorus Township actually started in the early 1900's. The location of the current picnic pavilion today was known as Leppo's Woods. A picnic area was established there, and local bands played. Residents of the old hotel barroom located on Stoverstown Road at Slagel Road would sit on the porch, watching the activity and listening to the music. The vision for a park was already established.

The 11.7 acres original land purchase was made by the Township Supervisors in 1984 from local farmer, John Shearer for $60,000. The original excavations started as early as the late 1988-90 period. The first actual construction project was done by Robert A. Kinsley, Inc., which included the pavilion, tennis courts, original baseball field and the initial children's playground equipment in 1993.

Families may also reserve our pavilion for special uses by coming into the Township office and signing up. This is free of charge, donations freely accepted. Many activities are held over the summer.

Since then a 3.8 acre parcel was purchased from David Boeckel in 1995 for the sum of $12,000. This parcel now includes another baseball field and soccer field areas. An Eagle Project by resident Christopher Essock in 1997, with matching funds by the Township, provided a fun and sturdy piece of children's playground equipment.

During the summer months, usually right after school lets out for the year, NCT along sponsors a summer playground program in the park under the direction of the Hanover YMCA. The program is held from 9-12 over a six week period, with one day set aside as a full day, when field trips are taken. This program is free and has occupied many of our Township children. They average between 50-70 children a day. There are many fun activities in a well directed environment.

A five member Recreation Board was established in 1987. This is strictly an advisory board to the Township Board of Supervisors. They submit budget requests annually and recommend projects to the Board of Supervisors. We currently have a very active Board and the recreation programs show the pride this Board takes in their responsibilities. There is a park workday planned once a year. The Board develops a list of jobs that need done and the teams that use the fields and their advisers join our Board and residents to accomplish those tasks, cleaning up the park for the season’s events.

In October, the Rec Board also plans a super duper Halloween party once a year for children of the Township.

An interview may also be required. LITs will be assigned to a group of campers and be responsible for helping to plan and run games and activities, act as a role model for campers and assist the counselors. Prior experience with children, leadership experience and camp experience are recommended but not required.

Tree Memory Program

The Rec Board is also developing a Tree Memory program. Individuals can purchase a tree in memory of someone for the park and the Township will mark that tree with a memory plaque. Watch the newsletter for further details.
